Across the globe there are many different examples of my fire project being presented because it’s such a broad issue. “Resources of an economy are the factors of production or the inputs which are used to produce an output i.e. goods and services.” Resources that are more important in the issue of poverty however is land and anything on it (including the people), oil because of the large consumption of it and the fact that it is a non renewable source, and water because it is essential to life.
And example of the issue with oil is the drilling of oil in Vietnam by the Chinese. A chinese corporation accidentally began drilling in Vietnam territory. This action began a territorial dispute between the Vietnamese and Chinese because neither of them are withdrawing from the argument. This shows how important the resource is since the Vietnamese have begun to use violence against the Chinese citizens (China Evacuates Thousands of Citizens from Vietnam after Deadly Attacks, Jethro Mullen). This fight for this resource may bring many consequences, damages, alliances that will lead to war, that also causes many expenses and damages to people and their homes. It’s all one big cycle of consequences to the innocent and the people who aren't thinking about the negative effects that are to come from their actions.
Something that has become a big issue is the importance of clean water around the world. In Africa there are many people without the privilege of clean water. According to the documentary F.L.O.W (For Love of Water) “traditionally water has been delivered as a public service by governments,” however water companies (three major water companies from Europe are selling water, Thames Water, Vivendi, Suez) come in to “developing countries” such as Bolivia and Kwazulu-Natal and make them pay for low quality water for high prices. In Kwazulu Natal they were given instructions in English even though many of the people there didn't understand it and when concerns were brought up to water and sanitation services, they simply avoided them.
The way resources are being distributed and used cause similar economic, political, and environmental impacts. It’s helpful to know how and why issues are interconnected because they might have similar impacts on people or the environment. For example as mentioned earlier, because each country wanted this resource they have resorted to physical violence. The misuse of certain resources causes environmental impacts whether it is pollution or the overexploitation of certain resources. For example petroleum is used daily even though it releases carbon into the air polluting the air, and the process of retrieving it may contaminate water supplies..Not to mention taking essential resources from the people living in exploited areas, they would be deprived of clean air, water, land and even peace should the problem continue to grow to the point of war which would cause it’s own negative effects as well.
Understanding the connection between these global issues help us realize all of the things that we don’t seem to put into consideration when taking questionable actions. Looking at my topic I understand that although different examples of the issue have similar outcomes, the same solution can’t be used for each problem, but something similar could.
