Values are “qualities and ideas about life that speak to what is important to us, that help guide our behavior and define who we are.” (Osment, H. Changing Values and Beliefs). Our values are shaped from personal experiences, culture, religion, peers, etc. Three values that are connected to my project would be money, land/territory, power. Most of the values in my topic are all connected to the idea of power; people need to be above others even if it means hurting other innocent people while reaching their own goals. Those consequences may cause anger amongst people, whether they may be victims or not, and cause them to take action to create their own informal sanctions and even formal, should they decide to include authorities.
“Norms are rules defining appropriate and inappropriate behavior.” These norms vary for each culture, depending on how severe the action is considered in that culture. “Norms range from relatively minor rules, such as the idea that we should applaud for a performance, to extremely important ones, such as laws against stealing.” A norm associated with my topic would be stealing because that’s basically what corporations have been doing to helpless people.
According to Sociology and You, sanctions are “rewards and punishments used to encourage people to follow norms.” Going with the idea of theft, a more formal sanction will take place. Formal sanctions include authority, suing a company would be an example of formal authority. A less formal approach would be people striking against a certain product or company by creating strikes stop the use of these certain products.
My issue would be labeled under conflict theory because of the constant fight between morality and money. According to an article by Jesús M. Zaratiegui, “The nature of modern economics has been substantially impoverished by the distance that has grown between economics and ethics ... [economics] can be more productive by paying greater and more explicit attention to the ethical considerations that shape human behaviour and judgement. It is not my purpose to write off what has been or is being achieved, but definitely to demand more.” To me, this quote is trying to explain that economics would improve if it were used to benefit people worldwide, not just a certain corporation. People worldwide are affected by the exploitation of resources and the distribution of them to other countries. Their health, home, morals are affected negatively by the exploitation of those resources. A specific example of this would be the dispute between the Chinese and the Vietnamese, who are currently fighting over petroleum. That fight will affect both countries, either their people or their political system. A war would mean so much more impact of the already impoverished, by people either destroying their home or encouraging them to fight, or by taking up places for the stage to their battle.
